Hey everyone, My name is David, and I am 22 year old recent graduate from American University. I am taking a year off school in order to apply to law school for Fall 2012. I wanted to start this group in order to find others out there who like to read non-fiction books that make you think about the world in a different way, books like "Freakonomics," "Predictably Irrational" and "The Tipping Point." There are a bunch out there that I have already read that I would love to discuss, but I am also …

Members bring at least one hard copy of their work in completed first drafts of stories (both fictional and non-fictional and everything in between). Someone in the group (not the writer) will read the story aloud. Stories should be no longer than about 2,000 words (about 8 pages) and can be as short as a fraction of a page as long as it feels complete. The workshop will meet for two hours, approximately. We have writers of different experience levels working in speculative, young adult, and dark fiction. We try to include a writing prompt at the end of every meeting.
This group is for support for the nonfiction writer. We have very different needs than fiction writers which we can support each other on. Like any other writers' group, we can pass around samples of our writing for critique and feedback. I write in the area of personal growth, but any nonfiction writing is welcome.

Our book club meets the third Thursday of every month and we rotate meeting "hosts" each month. We generally try to try a different book genre each month, such as memoir, non-fiction, science fiction, biography, autobiography, classic, fiction, etc. The "host" can select the meeting space, be it a coffee shop, bar, restaurant, or home, and comes up with a few good starter discussion questions.
